Services in Naxos

With a year-round population of c. 22,000 to serve, and as a service and provisions centre for the neighbouring
islands of Amorgos and the Minor Cyclades, Naxos has all the supplies, trades and skills you would expect
in a medium-sized town. The hospital operates an emergency and outpatients service, and some specialist doctors.
The Greek state schools educate up to secondary level; after that it’s to university in Athens before returning to work
in the family taverna or shop. Administratively, the island falls under the Prefecture of the Cyclades, but most local administrative matters, from planning permissions to refuse collection and paying water bills, are dealt with
through the town hall, or Dhimos.

Property

Development has spread south-west of Naxos town (Xhora), to border a string of magnificent strands from Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna to Orkos, Glyfada and Alyko, half-an-hour’s drive from town. Because of its size and
relatively low tourist profile, Naxos is one of the best value Greek islands on which to buy property;
expect to pay around €2200 to €2800  psm of house. Properties on the market include:
• stone-built houses in various stages of decay in and around the interior villages, but access is often tricky and renovation expensive.
• new-build neo-Cycladic style houses designed by local architects, usually found in small clusters on shared land
with sea views.
• ‘yparchei spitti’ – a house built in the last 20-30 years that is livable in, doesn’t consume yet more precious land,
but needs some attention.
