The main sporting activities on Naxos are centred on sea, wind and summer.
The beaches of the south and south-west coast are hotspots for wind- and kite-surfing,
while traditional sailing (dinghy/catamaran) is confined shallow waters sheltered from the prevailing north wind.
Long sandy beaches and dirt tracks winding among the plains of the south-west coast offer delightful horse-treks.
But these activities are seasonal, in action May-October inclusive.
For winter residents and visitors, health centres in Naxos Town offer gym facilities where you can work out for
an hourly rate, and do not need to be a member.
But the island's mountains and valleys, its network of traditional
paths, are there to explore all through the year on
foot, and there's a wealth of tantalizing dirt track routes for
mountain bikers to explore.
There is no municipal swimming pool – but then the sea is swimming temperature (at least for the hearty and determined) from April to November. With such a wealth of natural resources, other sports facilities, such as racquet sports courts, are confined to the occasional hotel, but there is a football stadium in Chora, a local football team,
regular inter-village five-aside matches.
